What is “Field Herping”?
To “go herping” or “field herping”, is to search for reptiles and amphibians in their natural state. Field herping started with biologists seeking out reptiles and amphibians for scientific research. Recently it has expanded to become a recreational pursuit for thousands of reptile and amphibian loving naturalists across the globe. Some field herpers collect animals, most often for use in captive propogation projects. Most simply take photographs to document their finds and release their catch unharmed.

Say that you're a zoo-keeper in a zoo, and your job is to keep the animals happy and healthy -- what would you do? Put them all in the same pen and feed them all dog chow? No. You would replicate each animal's natural habitat as closely as possible, and feed them the diet that they would naturally eat in the wild.
